How much room does a golf simulator need?

The short answer

Plan for about 10 ft (3 m) of ceiling and 12–15 ft (3.7–4.6 m) of width. Depth depends on where the launch monitor sits: a radar behind the ball needs about 14–22 ft (4.3–6.7 m), our sum of its stated distance and ball flight, while makers of camera and ceiling units recommend 12–18 ft (3.7–5.5 m).

  • Radar behind the ball: stated 5–9 ft (1.5–2.7 m) behind, plus 8–13 ft (2.4–4 m) of ball flight to the net (the sum is ours).
  • Camera or ceiling units: makers recommend 12–18 ft (3.7–5.5 m) of room depth.

Where the launch monitor sits decides how much of the room it uses. That one choice matters more than the brand.

Will it fit your room?

Set your room with the width, depth and ceiling sliders, pick where the launch monitor sits, and open the bay up to see each part. The checker compares your room with each maker’s figure and says “meets stated” or “below stated”; that is a comparison with maker figures, not a rating of the bay.

Example: a 13 × 16 × 9 ft (4 × 4.9 × 2.7 m) garage meets the stated figures of the Uneekor EYE MINI (12 ft deep and 13 ft wide, generic) and the Garmin R10 at its closest setting (6 ft behind plus 8 ft to the net, 14 ft, our sum). It is below the figures Trackman recommends for a Trackman 4 bay (18 × 15 × 10 ft, 5.5 × 4.6 × 3 m) and below Bushnell’s recommended 18 × 12 × 9 ft (5.5 × 3.7 × 2.7 m) simulation room.

What each maker states

Quotes are as published on the maker’s own page or manual. “Rec.” means recommended, “min.” means minimum, “generic” means the maker’s bay guide is not specific to the model, and “derived” means our sum. Hover or tap a dot for the quote, source and read date; “More columns” adds the stated distance behind the tee, ball flight, battery and weight. “Not stated” means the maker gives no figure.

Questions people ask

Does a radar launch monitor need a deeper room than a camera unit?

Yes, by its own placement figures. A radar behind the ball adds its stated 5–9 ft (1.5–2.7 m) to the depth; units beside the ball or on the ceiling state no distance behind the ball.

What ceiling height do makers state?

Most say 10 ft (3 m): Rapsodo (9 ft minimum), Trackman, Uneekor EYE XO2 and SkyTrak (9 ft minimum). Trackman iO support gives 9 ft 4 in (2.84 m) as a minimum. Garmin, Foresight and Bushnell give no minimum for a simulator.

Is an 8 ft ceiling enough?

Every maker that states a figure for a simulator setup gives 9 ft (2.7 m) or more. Bushnell lists 7 ft (2.1 m) only for a net setup without simulation.

How deep should a garage simulator be?

With a radar behind the ball, 14–22 ft (4.3–6.7 m) by our sums, or the 18 ft+ (5.5 m+) Trackman recommends. Makers of camera and ceiling units recommend 12–18 ft (3.7–5.5 m); Uneekor says 10 ft (3 m) may suffice.
